Project Overview

Banksia Global was engaged by New South Wales Health Department for a project aimed at integrating biomedical devices with electronic patient records. This integration has significantly improved hospital workflows and patient care quality.

The Challenge

The manual entry of patient observations into Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was consuming a substantial amount of nursing staff's time and was prone to human errors. This not only affected staff efficiency but also potentially compromised patient care quality due to delayed or inaccurate data recording.

Our Solution

We built a comprehensive observation message gateway using InterSystems IRIS for Health, featuring:

  • A real-time connection to various biomedical devices across multiple hospital departments
  • An Angular-based verification screen that allows staff to quickly review and confirm readings
  • Automatic data transmission to the hospital's Electronic Patient Record system
  • Customizable validation rules to ensure data accuracy
  • Comprehensive audit logging for all measurements

Results and Benefits

The implementation of this solution delivered significant improvements:

  • Reduced the time required for entering and verifying patient observations by over 65%
  • Enhanced workflow efficiency for nursing staff, allowing more time for direct patient care
  • Improved accuracy of patient vital signs records by eliminating manual data entry errors
  • Provided real-time data visibility across hospital systems
  • Created a scalable platform that can accommodate additional device types as needed
